Come here for takeout. The service is so bad it's unbelievable. We had made reservations and made it clear we had a baby. They said no problem your table will have plenty of room. They put us in a corner next to a bar which our stroller could barely fit into. We used our portable lobster chair but that part of the restaurant is slanted so I had to keep a foot on the leg to keep it from falling over. We asked for anew table but we're told no even though the dining room was half empty. It's okay to not want to accommodate small children but please let the families know and not make them suffer through a very uncomfortable dinner. That being said the food was very good but we will never eat there again unless we get takeout or they have some understanding of how treat their customers.

Don't try to order take out on a weekend!!! They will tell u to call back in 30-45min and then when u call back they will tell u they still can't take your order!!! Seems rather odd. Either do take out or don't!

Time for an update. The wonton soup actually went slightly downhill this visit, simply because the broth was not a flavorful. It was still eons better than the Americanized Chinese restaurant version, with shitakes, dumplings and a few bits of napa. The new app. of skewered pork is very tasty but needs a better sauce than jarred "duck sauce". How about hoisin or a spicy mustard, or whatever? The shrimp have improved and are now large prawns....much better. They also give you spicy HOT if you ask for it! I like the pineapple fried rice - it was loaded with shrimp, and my husband LOVED his spicy shrimp dish. The sticky rice with mango dessert is yummy.

My wife and I had dinner here and it was great. We shared a Fresh Basil Roll appetizer. My wife had the Vermicelli Noodle Salad for her dinner and I had the Spicy Basil Stir Fry with Chicken. The food was tasty and the presentation was excellent. We are owners of a Thai restaurant in our hometown so we have high standards. Thai Basil met our expectations.

My wife liked her curry dish she got. I got Kang par. With squid. Should I have gotten squid on a Sunday evening in the green mountains of Vermont? Apparently not. It smelled immediately like it wasn't real fresh. I ate it anyways (well...only a little...) It tasted good...although too fishy to be fresh squid. So I stopped eating it. I ate white rice and drank some beers which hit the spot. It was decent tasting and spicy but ultimately I felt not so hot health wise. Not worth 85 bucks for dinner here, to have complications later. Which I did. My wife only tried a little and...so did she. So. Not at all worth the money sadly.

Horrible service is an understatement. They were so late to serve the food that I had to cancel the order of entrée. I just paid for the drinks and had to leave. They did not even have the courtesy to apologize for the horrible service. The worst service ever received in a restaurant.

One of worst experiences I had in a restaurant. My friends and family told me the food was fine, but I couldn't know as my meal never arrived. We reminded the server but still it never came. Mistakes happen, but what shocked me is that except for a "sorry" nothing happened. No manager came to speak to us, no compensation offered, no real regret. They thought it is perfectly fine to have me leave without eating. Terrible experience

Good Thai food, somewhat over-priced. Maybe because VT doesn't have too many Thai places, the choice was made to make the dishes here very mild -- thinking that people might not be used to spicy food? In any case, my friends and I tried the Chicken Pad Thai, Chicken Massaman Curry, and Spring Rolls. All tasted quite fresh, had a decent amount chicken (in the entrees), and were packed nice & hot, so they were still warm when we got home. On the downside, the dishes were a little light on spice, and I don't just mean the heat level, but the amount of sauce/seasoning. Could have used a little more punch. Nonetheless, we enjoyed our meal. My feeling is that the food here, while good is over-priced. If this was truly amazing That, okay, but if the prices don't scare you off, you'll probably enjoy your meal.

It's not terrible. It's not the best Thai that I've had...but it's OK. Went there on a Sunday afternoon at around 2pm. The restaurant was quiet but I did notice that it's very clean and quite nice. This is not a dive. The staff was super friendly, attentive and just plain nice. The food? Really just OK. The drunken noodles dish was extremely salty and didn't taste like other versions that I've had in better places (and in Thailand). The red curry was actually quite nice - had a perfect kick to it and a lovely coconut-red-curry umami-thing happening. Not enough rice, though...it was a VERY small portion of rice for all of that curry sauce. The steamed Thai dumplings were decent - they're rather small and the appetizer only came with 4 dumplings. I ordered tea...thinking it would be Thai tea...but they came out with a box of assorted teas to choose from (which was a little odd). This is the most exotic fare you'll find in Manchester...so have at it. I might go back again sometime when I'm in town.

Fine. It's fine. We had been here before with my in-laws and baby, maybe 2 winters ago. We came last night with friends. Despite a reservation, we had to wait for the table to be prepared when we arrived. We were seated by the window and the floor was clearly slanted. No biggie, but definitely distracting throughout the meal. Our waiter was brusque and seemingly annoyed. He was a Caucasian male with glasses. I didn't care for him at all. The food was solid. Started with spring rolls and had the tofu curry noodles. Both delicious. I wish the portions had been slightly larger. We found the prices to be very reasonable. I'm sure we will be back again during the season. This is about as exotic as you'll get in this neck of the woods.

First might I say, props to the new waiter we had who described the green curry as "so hot it could be an enema for your nose" at the end of the meal. Enemas are TOTALLY business dinner conversation. But seriously, solid place! Both times I have been here it has been packed, the prices are a little above what I usually pay for Thai in Boston but the flavor profiles are not lacking at all. Ginger martini? More like lemonade martini with a hint of ginger. And c'mon, bartender, I didn't see or hear you shake the round of martinis-- who takes them stirred? Not me, I'm too Bond for that. If you're in Manchester and don't want a disappointing wait or poor service, here is the place to go.

Food seemed like it could be ok, but I've never sat in a room with so many people waiting on long overdue food. Our meal came out, stone cold and with noodles sticking together, after 40 minutes of waiting and a threat to leave. Frankly I would have rather left now after eating those cold noodles. The couple next to us did.

We absolutely love this little thai restaurant. Being from a city the prices seem more than fair, the food is authentic and really yummy and the service is great! The curry is so spicy and delicious, and the soups are out of this world! We love coming here when we are in Vermont, and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Manchester!

Hard Pass. After several attempts to let them get it right the experience just keeps falling flat. The food alone would be 4-stars. The service of the wait staff would be 3-stars, operationally 2-stars. Then there is the bartender and his overall lack of ability to handle anything, 1-star. This place needs a hands on manager with some talent and the establishment of standards of service and procedures. Here's a hint: when someone calls in a take out order remember to give it to the kitchen. In short, find a manager, fire the bartender (who handles the take out orders over the phone). Once thats done, ill try again....Not until

Really kind of a mediocre Thai place. Lets start from the top - its a beautiful business. Nicely decorated, beautiful lighting - and kept really clean. Walking in, you think you're in for a treat. The thing is, the food was all ... well okay. Some was bland, some was slightly better than okay. Nothing was terrible or even bad, but nothing was great either. Nothing creative (as the rather bland and predictable name would suggest). My experience may have influenced my memory of the food: It was a very busy Saturday night. It seemed like every restaurant in town was booked up, but we did manage to get a 7:30 reservation here for a party of 6. When we arrive - on time to the minute - we noticed there were two large tables near the front. One was being cleared out and the other had a family that was taking there time finishing desert. There was another couple talking to the hostess - who informed them they needed a reservation, but something might open up at the bar. She then asked if we had a reservation, I said "yes". And a group of 8 walked in. The hostess asked if they had a reservation, they said "yes" and were promptly seated at the recently vacated table. I wasn't annoyed yet - figuring the party of 8 could only fit at the table. But, after 10 minutes of waiting for the family, who had now finished eating and was just sitting around, I realized that both tables were the same size. Another 10 minutes goes by, and the table is still occupied. There are a 1001 tricks hosts use to move a table that is lingering - you can start clearing tables, you can ask repeatedly if they need anything, or you can frankly inform them that people are waiting for the table. They started clearing stuff after a half hour of the family just sitting there, and it still took 15 minutes more for them to clear out. So, as soon as the table empty and cleared - but not set- we encouraged one of the party members with a bad knee to sit down. We had been walking a lot that day, and it seemed like a good idea. We were very gruffly informed by a waiter "if you don't sit down, we can set up faster" Look - we'd been waiting 45 minutes past our reservation for a table, after for no apparent reason, a group that came in AFTER us was seated at a table that would have worked for us. No apologies were given - and now we're trying to get someone with a bad knee a place to sit. Its not like there is a convenient place to stand anyway. One member of the party pulled the waiter aside to tell him as much - and he got an "okay", and quickly detached himself to work on another table. We should have given up after we were skipped - Pizza to go and games back at the house would have been much more pleasant. So - yes, I understand that it was a crowded day and things go wrong. Its not there fault that table took so long to clear out. They could have tried to speed it up, and they sure as hell should have seated us at the free table when we came in, but ignoring that - waiting close to an hour after your reservation at least warrants having the fact that you just stood around for an hour acknowledged. If this happens AFTER you skipped us in line - you should be shocked we stuck around, and very appreciative. My suggestion - there are many great places to find food in the area - go explore one of them. Or better yet - do go here, that way when I am in the area there might be one more table available elsewhere - cause I know I won't be going back to Thai Basil.

I would have given 2 stars but they charged more on my credit card than I signed for. I clearly remember putting in a tip so that the final total was a round number. When I checked my statement the next week, I noticed that it was about $2.xx higher than what I had put down. Now I know and acknowledge that my tip (16% for lunch) was a bit low, especially for a group of 9, but the food and the service were definitely below adequate. Was going to call my bank (on principle!) but ended up not as I decided my time was worth more than the $2. As mentioned above. the food was sub-mediocre. The tom yum soup was not your typical tom yum soup. It was more like sour and salty water with an aftertaste akin to throw-up...My friends have had better pad thai from take-out Thai places in NYC, and my green curry noodles was the wrong type of noodle (never had vermicelli noodles in a thai curry noodle dish before). The only decent dish was the massaman curry that one of my buddies got, but the portion of rice that came with was minuscule. The food took a very long time to come out - and it came out one dish at a time. By the time the last person got their food, the first person's food wasn't hot anymore. The only redeeming quality was the server's attitude was great. He actually seemed like he liked his job and made us feel welcome to be there. The decor inside is nice and upscale, but it doesn't make up for the quality of the food, and the overcharging of my CC. Tldr; sub-standard food, mediocre service, ***make sure you check your CC bill after to ensure they don't overcharge you***

Very special Thai place here in Manchester. I frequent Thai restaurants wherever I travel, and this one deserves five stars. The service is attentive (albeit I was there late) and friendly. Full flavors in the Chicken Larb salad (beautiful) and the Spicy Thai Basil chicken stir fry with delicious multi-toned brown rice. Never had brown rice quite like this. Wow! The extra Thai peppers on the side added an amazing kick. My stiff neck was mostly relieved while eating the ramped up food. Amazing what spice does for the body. The Crab Angel puffs were lightly fried with a delicious and generous crab and sweet cream cheese center. Amazing!!! The Thai iced tea was perfect. The building, the decor, and the lighting provide a great atmosphere. Very clean too. Ask for Shawn. Great waitor. Really cares. I'll be back.

We went here as a family and were shocked and disappointed to learn they had no kids menu. The kids shared chicken satay, which was good and cooked well. I ordered green curry, which was spicy and delicious. The vegetables were not overcooked, which happens so often at Thai restaurants.

So I mean this is a Thai restaurant called "Thai Basil" in a tiny Vermont town - the food and the experience you get here will pretty much be exactly what you expect. Luckily we didn't expect much.

We almost always stop in here for lunch when we are in Manchester. Great soups, larb and papaya salad. The curries are delicious, too. Dinners are pricey, but lunches are reasonable. Wish this restaurant was closer to us.

Its more like a take out place. Food portion is small. I like the food, but way too salty. I had to ask a bowl of ri e to eat with my nodles.

  • Allyson S.

Don't bother. Food is DRASTICALLY overpriced! Take out is horrible. I ordered miso soup and fried rice (fairly standard I would have thought). When I got home the rice was plain and looked half - eaten. Upon calling the restaurant I was informed that I was given a side of rice that is "the size of an ice cream scoop". Apparently since they only charged me for the side dish it was ok that I did not get what I ordered. No offer was made to compensate or correct the situation.

I have no idea how this place stays open. My only guess is that Thai Basil survives primarily on tourists who have never been there. I have had it about three times only because it is the only Thai option and my girlfriend has the occasional craving. Each of the three times we have gotten food from Thai Basil we have had the same complaints: 1) Cost: The food is overpriced and the portions are small. The menu online actually has different prices from the prices that they charge. 2) Flavor: Even when we ask for our food to be spicy, they don't make it spicy. This is NOT Thai food. Thai food needs to be spicy. It is understandable to not make it spicy if you don't ask for it spicy, but are they truly incapable of making a spicy Thai dish? On top of that, the food is always lacking flavor and too salty. Even the Pad Thai is bad. That's quite an accomplishment. The only positive thing I can say about it is that they have your food ready quickly. But I'd definitely wait a while if that would result in food that tastes good. Don't bother going here. Go to Cilantro, spend 1/3 of the money and get flavorful food with as much spice as you want.

  • M B.

Probably the worst Thai food I've had anywhere, and needlessly expensive! Consistently overpriced, with small portions of bland food. Not close to authentic Thai based on my experience. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is ok, but the one time I went in, the server tried to serve us our main dish before the appetizer and was actively annoyed with us when we said we would like our appetizer first. Then, I'm pretty sure our main dish just sat out in the kitchen until we were ready for it, because it was lukewarm. I've gotten takeout as well and it both times it was disappointing.

Best food in Manchester!! Delicious times a million!! Every dish is off the charts amazing!! Jamie is the most amazing waitress and always has great recommendations. Wouldn't want any other waitress while visiting Manchester! My entire family loves this place... Even the little ones!! I highly recommend Thai basil!!

Lacking the Thai... My dish was heavy on the celery and onion. Lacking flavor. We were sat at a slanted table on the dining room that made you feel tippy. Ordered a Sapporro on draft... Oh sorry we are out. Our server was also the bartender.

Stopped in here for a change of pace from the heavy pizzas and surprisingly good French fare in Manchester. It certainly wasn't the worst Thai I've ever had and even surprised me with a bit of flavor. First off, being from the west coast, I'm used to an entirely different type of Thai cuisine. Over there, it's a lot more spice (like make you cry spicy), with thicker sauces and more vegetables. East coast seems to favor dishes more akin to a lighter Chinese dish with barely any spice (BTW, I know that both coasts produce fairly non-authentic dishes) with a ton of meat. So to have something "different" from those types is a nice change. The summer rolls were small but very tasty. The Thai Basil was very spicy and loaded with vegetables and meat. The sauce was very light though. We asked for some chili sauce and they brought a big dish of different spices. I was very impressed at that. I would go back even thought the prices were a little on the expensive side.

Restaurant seems to be hitting its stride despite early service problems noted in early reviews. Have been there twice with family (including young kids) in the last week on our way to basketball games for yet another kid. Both times we told the staff about time constraints and our food practically flew out of the kitchen. Waitstaff was attentive, full of good suggestions, andfamiliar with the menu, even the non-Thai staff (and let's face it - VT is not exactly swimming in Thai waitstaff) On to the food Tuna Tartare was tremendous as an appetizer followed by a VERY spice (by request) Drunken Noodle. I am sure they can dumb it down but what's Thai food without a little sweat on your brow? I am told the Thai Basil chicken was also delicious, although less spicy. Kids had Chicken Satay (minus the peanut dipping sauce due to a nut allergy) also enjoyed the wonton soup and yummy Thai "Sticky" rice. (Not the real sticky rice but sticky by my kids' standards. Second visit was a repeat of the first except I got the Masaman Pork, which was perfectly done. In and out in 45 minutes (at our choosing - I am sure lingering is encouraged and allowed if you are not running to your next event). Delicious food, great atmosphere, friendly and attentive staff.

What a pleasant surprise to have a genuine Thai restaurant in the area. We have been going to Stratton regularly for 12 years and Asian cuisine in the area has been "challenged," to say the least. I ordered the Tom Yum with Shrimp and asked for the "5" rating of spicy. Wow....I teared, sweated and thoroughly enjoyed it. It also had a great full flavor that flowed with the spice. I also had the Tofu and shrimp in a ginger sauce which had full, not overwhelming flavour. The kids loved their pad thai and for those who liked asian food, they were very impressed. I have had Thai food all around the world and, I must say, this is up there with the best of them. Based on the other reviewers comments about the service, the owners must have taken this to heart as our service, albeit was high school age, was attentive and patient. My one suggestion is to keep the water glasses full and check in with the table more frequently.

The experience here was greatly tarnished when the Creme Brûlée was delivered sans the promised "sizzling sugar." When I complained the desert was "cold" I was told the blow torch was out of gas! Translation: Serve it anyway and hope he doesn't notice. The handling of the issue was unprofessional and insulting. The economy has hit Manchester hard enough. This attitude won't help fill the hotels and other restaurants. It will only create yet another empty storefront.

I was SO excited to hear about a Thai restaurant coming to Manchester. For years we would drive to Brattleboro or Saratoga, etc just to get thai food since there was none locally. I have traveled the world and specifically search out Thai restaurants wherever I go because I love the food so much. Unfortunately, after two meals at Thai Basil, I am still driving an hour+ to eat Thai. The initial experience was a bland, lifeless Thai meal. We were very disappointed as it was certainly the dullest thai food I've ever had. But we went back with hope that it was just a bad night that first time. Dinner #2 we specifically asked for spice and (I am totally serious about this) they brought the same basil stirfry meal but with red pepper flakes (pizza pepper flakes) on top to add spice, nothing more. To make it worse, I ordered mine with tofu and I got three grey strips of tofu underneath my meal. Just like they were cut out of the box and laid there raw. uncooked, no breading, not even cubed. I've never seen such a thing. We left wondering if the chef had ever cooked (or even eaten) Thai food before. Honestly, I'd go back often if it were even just average. But it's not. Perhaps we just hit two bad nights but I'm not rolling the dice on a 3rd. The owners must be happy with the food so I don't pretend my opinion can change things. Hopefully enough people like it to support them.

Thailand basil is simply awesome. This is the jewel of southern Vermont when it comes to Thai food. The menu is a little pricey but what isn't these days. The food certainly warrants a premium . Will try again soon.

Was heading to Bistro Henry but after a big Mother's Day, it was closed on a Wednesday. In the pouring rain, we spotted this place on the way back and it seemed to have charm. It advertises Martinis and has them albeit a bit pricey. The menu is deep and diverse and again a bit pricey. The food and service were delightful especially for a restaurant that has only been open since last July. I had a medium spicy dish and had a lot of water with it. The decor was elegant.

The service was attentive and the food was great. We (my husband and I) stopped in here on a Saturday after Thanksgiving. It wasn't too crowded, and the service was as attentive (even overly polite). We split a pad thai with scallops and beef, and it was enough for our small stomachs, though the portions are smaller than most Thai restaurants I've visited. It tasted great, especially the scallops. The atmosphere is cozy and clean, and I felt a little underdressed. I was encouraged (that this wasn't just a tourist spot) to see that I recognized a local sitting at the bar. We finished with creme brulee, which was adequate, but obviously not made-to-order.

I never really explored Thai food before, though my family and friends are big fans. I ventured. The Crispy Duck special was amazing, and the Crab Angles ( like a crab rangoon) were just heaven! I went back, a month later. I tried Pad Thai with pork! WOW I am a fan... extremely good with good depth of flavor. I had to have the Crab Angles again, to check consistency, of course. Yep, just as good as before... I will be back!

Just tried this for the 1st time. We reside in Manchester 6 mos of the year and had just returned the other night and decided to try this restaurant. What a pleasant surprise! The service was outstanding - Jamie the waitress, Jared (sp?) the bartender, a woman who was managing the front room, and even the chef (or owner?). They must have read the Yelp suggestions because the service could not have been better - the perfect blend of attentiveness without being intrusive. The food was outstanding. The waitress made good suggestions. My husband had the duck with ginger and I had the duck with lemongrass. Both were excellent, crispy on the outside, moist on the inside, and just the right amount of sauce to set off the flavors. The plate was beautifully finished off with fresh vegetables. My husband also had the spring rolls to start and liked them. I had a maple martini (I did say I had just returned from VT after 6 months) which was tasty - but it is definitely sweet enough to call dessert. Thai Basil has become our new go-to place for the next 6 months.

We decided to give this place a shot after reading the other reviews. After our visit, I would side with the lower end of the stars. We prefaced our expectations given the fact that we were in Vermont but even with low expectations the food arrived even more bland than expected. It was like trying to find a new Thai place after moving only to be disappointed.

Recently visited for dinner on a very hot day, this restaurant did not disappoint! The waiter was superb, and the food was great! The Cosmopolitan I had was a bit pricey, as is the food, but overall, a nice place to eat when you want a change from pizza & Italian.

Very very impressed with Thai Basil. The food is very good, the temp on my steak was a little more rare than the midrare I asked for but I dont mind at all. The sauce was amazing. The potstickers app was kind of small for the price but it was so good, also a very original and tasty sauce. Original is a good word for this Thai fusion restaurant, and I've never had Thai food this good. The service was stellar, our table wobbled and asked the hostess for matchbooks to fix it and she got on her hands and knees and fixed it herself despite my willingness to do it. That is service you will not get just anywhere. We love this place and we will be back. PS. The price of dining here is very reasonable. Not exactly a cheap date but more reasonable than most spots in Manchester.

Yelpeeeee! I almost did not go as we didn't see this on Yelp but decided to try a yelpless restaurant, which i rarely do anymore. The waiter told us they were open a couple of months and the kitchen timing could probably improve but they were so charming it didn't really matter. We began with the pot stickers which were homemade and wonderful. They were more delicate than the usual gluey kind we were expecting. Three of us had curry dishes. Our sons had a special duck red curry dish. It had two stars for heat but wasn't terribly hot. I had shrimp in the same curry with potatoes, cashews, onions and avocado. My husband had a sweet and sour sauteed dish with mixed fish. The fish included shrimp, scallops, mussels and calamari. Everything was very tasty. The ambiance was upscale coffeehouse and was very homey. It seemed there were locals returning. I also saw a dish go by served in a pineapple half that looked very elegant. They had red, green and mango curries and all types of sit fry. It was full on a beautiful summer evening. It is not inexpensive but it should be a huge hit in winter! What could be wrong with stemming hot curries after a long day on the slopes? Try this thai, and come in out of the cold for a bit of "heat"!

Excellent food at this newly opened restaurant, centrally located in Manchester. If you're looking for something a little more ethnic than the usual "new-american" Vermont fare, this is a great choice. The masaman curry was outstanding; it's apparently a family recipe and it does not disappoint. 4.5 stars really - maybe 1/2 star taken away because of the somewhat high price tag ($50 for two entrees/2 drinks) compared with typical Thai restaurants; this is a real gem.
